It is an opinion of experienced system administrators that "the database environment is fragile unless supported by a comprehensive and well-tested backup program." However, back-up devices can also become corrupt leaving the client with serious problems.
Normal system maintenance routines are unable to recover all data if media failure or structural damage has occurred. In fact, these routines will often increase the damage.
Much as personal computer hard drive and laptop data recovery will often become necessary, databases such as Oracle, Sybase and SQL also fail, and must have the data within them recovered.
Some problems that occur in Database servers are:
- Backup file recognition failure or corruption
- Virus infection
- Locked database files
- Missing tables
- Deleted records
- Corrupt DB files
- Damaged partition tables, files or folders
- Accidentally overwritten or deleted database files
