The voltage rating should match that of the original battery or as recommended by the computer manual. If one uses a battery with a different voltage setting then it can seriously damage the laptop. This does not damage the laptop but these batteries last longer as compared to the original manufacturer's batteries.
The runtime of a laptop battery depends upon the individual notebook computer and is based on the applications being used, the number of times something is saved or retrieved from the CD Rom drive, memory of the notebook and capacity of the battery.
