It is a large piece of paper which hangs from the wall or other such surface. These are frequent tool of advertisers, propagandists, protestors and other groups which try to communicate a message and it also sees personal use by people generally the young who wish to decorate in a relatively low cost manner.
The revolution in posters came with the development of color lithography which allowed cheap printing of posters illustrated in vibrant colors. The concept was developed in France and by 1890's spread throughout Europe. Poster art was created during this period by a number of noted artists, the notable among them being Henri de Toulouse Lautrec and Jules Cheret.
These posters had great artistic merit and they became extremely collectable, the notable being World’s Fair and Colonial Exhibitions. 1960's saw the rise of pop art and protest movements throughout the West and both made great use of posters. The most acclaimed posters were those which were produced French students during the May 1968.
