These are manufactured by 3M and it is a piece of stationery with a read hearable strip of adhesive on the back which has been designed for temporarily attaching notes to documents, computer displays and so forth. The most common size of Post it note is a 3 inch square, trademark canary yellow in color.
They make use of a unique low track adhesive which enables the post its to be easily attached and removed without leaving any marks or residue. The name Post it is the trademark of 3M which invented it. The generic terms which are acceptable for competitors include sticky notes or prepositional notes.
The original sticky note was invented by Spencer Silver in 1968 who was a 3M researcher. While trying to design a strong adhesive he developed a weak one. There was no application of it apparently. By 1977, initial prototypes were available and only by 1980-81 after large sampling campaign the product was introduced around the world. They are available in a wide variety of sizes and formats. They have adhesive stripe on one edge similar to book binding.
