The first version of a computer program is generally symbolized as a beta version or beta release. It is implemented with all necessary features and aspects, albeit extra and additional features can possibly be added in the long run. It is supposed to be unstable but beneficiary for internal demonstrations and previews with a view to select customers, but not yet ready to be released. A few of the developers relates to this stage as a technical preview (TP), as a preview, or as an early access. In the full development cycle, beta version stands at an intermediate stage. They are released by the developers to a group of beta testers and sometimes the general public for a user test. And if any bugs found by them is reported by the testers and sometimes minor features they would like to seen and added in the final version.

Generally this stage is begun when a feature freeze on the product is announced by the developers, which is meant for no more requirements would be accepted for this version of the product. Except the issues or bugs and unimplemented features of the software will be addressed.

  • Beta 1 Microsoft represented its first release in beta form on January 6, 2005, and some new features were added over GIANT AntiSpyware; pre-eminently, it was a re-branding release. With the advent of 2005 more and more builds were released, and the last beta 1 refresh was released on November 21, 2005.
  • Beta 2 On February 13, 2006, Microsoft released Windows Defender (beta 2); it had a significant redesign and new name of the earlier program having huge improvements. The core engine was rewritten in C++, dissimiliar to the original GIANT-developed one, which was written in Visual Basic. This brought about improvements in the performance of the application and also, the program now acts as a Window service, contrary to the previous release. This makes the work of the application continue when a user is not logged on. Due to this, the Windows Defender application proves technically an interface to the service, which is also known by the very same name. Besides it, now more point-of-entry are secured than the original application. Beta 2 also needs Windows Genuine Advantage validation .But Windows Defender, in its existing build, is not consisted with few of the tools found in Microsoft AntiSpywar (Beta1).It has removed function of the System Explorer tool found in MSAS (beta1), and the Track Eraser tool, whereby the users are allowed to easily delete many different types of temporary files found in Windows, comprising Window Media Player, temporary internet files, and cookies.
